When the doorbell rang Hester pushed Mattie out to go and answer it. "You look beautiful. Go make mad passionate love to the man who thinks you're the best thing since sliced bread and I'll ring you in the morning to get all the juicy details."

Mattie glared at him, just before he shut her bedroom door, before going to answer the door. Hester had brought over one of his sister's long skirts and Mattie was doing her best not to trip over it. Skirts weren't something she had a lot of practice with. Dates were something she had even less practice with than skirts, because it had been a very long time since she liked someone enough to go on a date with them. Biting hard on her lip opened the door. Taylor smiled at her. "Hi."

She smiled back. "Hi."

"You ready to go?"

"No, but we should go anyway. I don't think this is something I will ever truly be ready for."

"I know what you mean." Their eyes met. "We aren't going anywhere incredibly fancy, because a lot of places like that do terrible food." She couldn't help breathing a sigh of relief. "Yeah, I actually like to be able to eat when I go out." He shook his head. "The thought of attempting to choke down breast of pigeon when all I want to do is focus on you made me feel unhappy, so I went for this little Italian place I spend a lot of time in."

As she followed him out the door, closing it behind her as he went, she studied him. "You can't cook?"

"Not so much that I can't. More than I don't have time to cook, because I'm always busy. Sadly there doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day and I just don't know what to do about that." He sighed. "There was a time when I dreamt of building a time machine, until I realised I didn't have enough time to do that either, so I've mostly given up on that idea."

"Working two jobs can make it hard for me to find time to do things." Mattie bit her lip, remembering too late she hadn't mentioned that before, and when he looked over at her she could see the sadness in his eyes. "Both of them are part time, if that makes it any better."

"It doesn't." He reached out behind him to take her hand. "Why do you have to work two jobs, Mattie?"

"Mom and Dad were never rich. Most of the books I've read have been borrowed from the library, so I don't have any bookcases in there. Every penny I make goes on surviving and I don't earn enough to get me though to the end of the month, although that isn't for lack of trying. Both my jobs pay minimum wage."

"You work at an office?"

"That is job one. I work there five days a week, 8pm until 2pm, and I knew when I accepted it there was no chance of it paying enough for me to be able to afford even a studio apartment here.
